Our Team in 1998
LET’S TALK ABOUT US

University of La Laguna Wrestling Team (ULLWT) has been playing in 3rd category since 1989, being there year after year, and that’s why it’s considered the oldest team in this category (talking about continuity) in Tenerife, even among so celebrity teams like Tijarafe, Tegueste or Rosario. But this is not the first university wrestling team in the official wrestling competition in the ULL. There was an important participation on the 70´s, when wrestlers could play in more than one team simultaneously (always in different categories). We can cite to Domingo Peña, Sergio Casañas, José Miguel Martín (today’s President of the Canarian Wrestling Federation, June 2000), Tomás Zamora, Mateo Perera, Carlos Juan González, Hermógenes Pestana, or Luis C. Marrero Gordillo (Norberto’s big brother). Also famous wrestlers like Berto De La Rosa or his brother Juani De La Rosa have played in this team.

When the 70´s came to the end, the Team disappeared, and it had to come year 1986 to watch the ULLWT alive again. In this occasion it came helped by Luciano Reverón (Business student), Norberto Marrero (Health Science student) and Justo Pérez (Physics student), who can be called the “founders” of this charismatic team in its new age. “Chano” Reverón has already left the team, but he meet all the members once a year (the “meeting day” of the ULLWT). Justo Pérez is still among us, but he doesn’t play yet, he said good bye to competition this year (2000). Justo is the President today, and he teaches Thermodynamics in the Faculty of Physics. Norberto Marrero is the coach and the physician, and he still plays wrestling every weekend. On the other hand, we have to cite to Juan Antonio Segura, who was the first coach of the ULLWT, and who had a very important role in the beginning of this second phase. He was the coach of the Junior Team of Santa Cruz (Tenerife), and today he has founded a new team in Santa Cruz, “El Alegría”.
